A steering committee has formed, asking the City of Wanneroo to aid in establishing a men’s shed for the Yanchep area.
Formed after 24 people attended a community meeting at Yanchep Sports and Social Club in early August, the Yanchep Community Men’s Shed committee has officially asked the City for its support.
Men’s Sheds are an increasingly popular alternative to traditional therapies relating to depression in men. Seen as an “updated version of the shed in the backyard that has long been a part of Australian culture,” they operate as safe places for men to socialize, learn new skills, express themselves, and just relax in an accepting arena.
Committee secretary, Gavin Moore says the support for the group was overwhelming.
Mr Moore, committee chair, Malcom Gow, deputy Colin Vann, and treasurer Ron Bartle await the City’s response to their request for 1000sqm for the new branch of WA Men’s Shed Association.
Wanneroo councilor, Sabine Winton, also lodged a 110-signaure petition on behalf of the residents on August 16, and Butler MLA, John Quigley, has written to Lotterywest to discover potential grants the movement could apply for.
